Drugs are chemical substances that change the way a person’s mind or body works. Drugs include prescribed medicines, alcohol, illegal drugs. Illegal drugs include cocaine, heroin, marijuana etc. Consumption of these drugs can lead to drug addiction. Drug addiction is a condition in which a person takes the drugs on regular basis irrespective of the harm they cause to the brain and body. The changes can last for very long which means that people who are at recovery stage are also at risk.
There are various factors that lead to drug addiction for example mental health problems. People more often teenagers who are struggling with emotional problems turn to drugs to deal with the pain. In short term they may lead to negative thoughts, hopelessness and anxiety. In long term, this leads to dependence. One thing can also lead to other a person can have drug addiction which can cause him/her to have mental health issue. Other factors include trouble at home, school or work place, bad company etc.
Treatment is necessary to cure drug addiction. Various types of treatment are there depending on the persons need. A combination of several types of therapies are used this includes detoxification, medication- assisted therapies and behavioural therapies. Therapy also helps in building self-esteem and teaches healthy coping mechanism. Some other kinds of therapy include inpatient and outpatient therapy. Inpatient therapy includes hospitalization, therapeutic communities or sober houses which are tightly controlled, drug free environment.
If drug addiction goes without treatment, then it can cause damage to major organs including heart, liver kidney etc. It can wreak havoc in relationships and also block people from creating new relationships.
There is no cure for drug addiction but risk is always there. Addiction can be controlled but it can return too. It is a life long job. There it is better to prevent this from happening. The first step of prevention begins with educating people. Talk to them about the consequences and there are other ways to solve problems. Avoiding drugs is the best preventive method once you have tried it, it becomes harder to quit.
Relapse is a common phenomenon in the healing process. It is not, in any way, a sign of failure. Changing any habit, whether or not you are recovering from drug addiction, is difficult. It’s even more difficult when you’re mentally and physically reliant on something.
Many people are afraid of being judged which leads them to keeping secrets. Always remember that your health comes before anything. Keeping a secret is a huge psychological burden.
